Scientists Invent Device to Convert Urine into Clean Drinking Water

Home
Exclusively on ZL7T blog, Belgian scientists have successfully created a device powered by solar energy that purifies urine, making it suitable for drinking. This invention can be utilized in rural areas and developing countries where access to clean water is limited. The innovation relies on solar-generated energy, emphasizing its energy-efficient application.

Dr. Sébastien Derez, the scientist behind the device, explained that it has the capability to purify urine, extracting water suitable for consumption, as well as nutrient-rich fertilizer. The process is relatively simple and operates through solar energy.

Device Operation Mechanism

The device collects urine in a large tank before heating it using a boiler to separate its components and convert it into vapor. This vapor is then condensed into pure water fit for drinking, along with a collection of nutrients like potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which can be used as fertilizer.

The inventors proudly exhibited the device at a music and theater festival under the slogan "Urinate for Science." The research team presented the device to the attendees and managed to extract 1000 liters of urine from the participants.

The Goal of Creating a Urine-to-Water and Fertilizer Device

According to Derez, the main objective behind this invention is to provide water and fertilizer to water-scarce regions, as well as densely populated areas like airports, universities, and stadiums. The device aims to address water scarcity issues while also contributing to sustainable resource management.
